I went to my parents’ house the other day after a hard workout starving and went straight to their refrigerator. When I opened the refrigerator, I found staring at me, three bottles of Coca-Cola, and I thought, “yuck!” I forgot my sister had a few people over for a BBQ the day before and was surprised to see this poisonous stuff at my parents’ house, who by now, know better (or suffer the consequences of dealing with my wrath!)
The thing is, not that long ago I used to say, “Yuck!” but for a different reason. I thought plain coke was too sweet, as it contained close to 40 grams of sugar, and I preferred diet-coke. In fact, diet coke was my beverage of choice for years and years, having been on diets since the ripe age of 12, though back in the late 1980’s, I preferred TAB.
Fast forward to the past three years, I can’t get near any of those carbonated beverages. They are all definitely too sweet, but I also cringe at the thought of showering my body with so many chemicals. Regular coke may have high fructose corn syrup, but the diet drinks usually have aspartame, which has been linked with a multitude of health issues ranging from depression and fatigue to possible neurological problems and memory loss, or other artificial sweeteners which have been linked to allergic reactions, headaches and possibly cancer.
I mean, would you take a regular shower with that stuff. If it is sticky and gross if it touches the outside of your body, how do you think the inside of your body reacts to it?
Did you know that that the acid content of such drinks is so low that you can use these drinks to clean toilets or erosion from car batteries? Imagine what it can do to the enamel of your teeth?
I’m not sure how the term “soft drinks” came about, but what I do know, is that these drinks will soften your teeth and your bones since they contain high levels of phosphorous, which can cause calcium levels to drop leading your body to pull calcium out of your bones.
How many people do you know who still think they are being more “healthy” by drinking diet sodas?
Drink water people! Better yet, drink coconut water, which is loaded with vitamins and minerals.
“But no! Water doesn’t taste good”, is the response I usually get. Get used to it. Your brain has become addicted to the high fructose corn syrup and the chemicals that are creating the taste. You have to reprogram your brain and taste buds like you would with any drug that is pleasing to your senses but harmful to your body.
Rule of thumb: Shower your body on the inside with what you would choose to shower your body with on the outside.
With Love,
Dr. Eva

Great article! I have taken soda out of my diet for the past few years even though it never was a big part of my diet but today, I stick with water, coconut water, and milk as my main beverages. Hopefully this article will be able to reach some people that don’t understand the effects that Diet sodas have on your body.
